A few scenes from out the window again...

I haven't posted on the blog for a week!! Time for something!

Last night at dusk we saw four deer walk around the back yard browsing for food.

We never seem to tire of seeing them! It's a treat each time.

Last week this time we were experiencing a blizzard - strong winds whipping the snow around. I took this picture of Mr. Cardinal sitting there - and you can tell the wind is blowing strongly against his little body.

A few days before the blizzard we looked out and low and behold! There was Mr. Owl - he blends in, doesn't he? Of course we are happy to see him because it's such an amazing bird, but on the other hand, he is there as a predator... oh well, what's one or two less rodents around? Go have some lunch, Mr. Owl. It's on us.


Speaking of predators, this one is not one we are happy to see. This is a sharp-shin hawk and he is interested in pursuing the birds at our feeders. When all of a sudden the birds disappear, or remain perfectly still, you know the hawk is likely in the area.

This was also taken the day of the blizzard. I thought it was great that I captured two birds in the same picture.

For many years we have had squirrels; lots of active, dramatic leaping squirrels. Other then their antics trying to access the bird seed (which we discourage!) they are fun to watch as they leap from branch to branch, high up in the trees. Mostly we have had red squirrels and grey squirrels. We have seen black squirrels in the town but never out here in the "country." But last year things changed and the black squirrels expanded their territory to include our backyard. The other squirrels do not seem to like them and we often see them chasing them. Perhaps they are just playing? Don't think so...
