Breakfast of blessings

Tomorrow morning is the start of the new church year of Sunday school and back to the regular schedule of church services, etc. We have a wonderful tradition the last few years of having all the adults enjoy a big breakfast together during the Sunday school hour.

So the tables are all set; I love the fall colors and the welcoming feeling of having the room set up and ready!

Our church is a loving place; great solid Biblical preaching and a warm fellowship.

This is small compared to the banquet we will enjoy in heaven!

May God richly bless your day today!

Missing those Harvest stands!

I love fall and when the first day of September rolls around, I am one happy gal. Summer, strangely enough, is my least favorite season. And fall and winter are my most favorite! I love everything fall - and decorating to celebrate autumn is something I am always anxious to do! I get nostalgic for the cute fall/harvest stands in New Jersey, where I grew up, and where fall lingers so much longer then here in Minnesota. If you blink, you might miss fall...
but if you live in New Jersey, you would see stands like this often! Big beautiful mums and an abundance of pumpkins and baskets of juicy apples. Yes, we have those things in Minnesota, just not as abundant and lush.

That being said, I have my very own farm produce stand right in my kitchen. I welcome putting it out every September! Isn't it cute?

And a few fall leaves with orange lights adds to the reminder that FALL IS HERE!

Another very happy perfectly ordinary day for me!

Crock pot mania -updated

Have you noticed a surge in crock pot cooking lately? I have always been a big crock pot fan and just the other day a few young gals started a facebook page about cooking in crockpots that soared in interest right off the bat. Wow.

I have four crockpots. I use them a lot. The oldest is pictured here to the right (you could have probably guessed that with that trendy brick pattern!) It would be circa 1975. My next crock pot is similar to that one except that it has a removable interior (that was state of the art at that time!). A few years ago I invested in the larger oval shaped crockpots and I have two: the one pictured here and also a similar one that has a lid that snaps tightly closed for transporting.

The significant different is, however, the temperature of these crockpots. The setting of "low" used to be actually "low" and one could cook a meal for a long time on low and have it moist and delicious. However, somewhere along the line the manufacturers choose to raise the low temperature due to concerns about food poisoning and foods not fully cooked. While this is understandable it is extremely frustrating because the premise of slow cooking is just that.. SLOW. Despite complaints, I don't see any change on the horizon.

That being said, the law of unintended consequences seems to be showing its ugly head. Some folks are now cooking their meals on "warm" (a setting lower then low, intending, of course, to merely keep foods warm) - thus cooking meals on lower then proper temperatures to offset the manufacturers desire to insure less chance of food-borne illness! It may have been better to have just left things the way they were!

I am experimenting with the temperatures in these two crockpots. I placed 2 cups of water in each and after an hour, the crock pot on the left had water that was already 187 degrees fahrenheit while the crock pot on the right had water only 120 degrees. Bear in mind that
the size of each crock pot made for different depths of water. I have now put 2 quarts of water into each crockpot and will test again after a number of hours.

The crockpot on the left got hot to the touch in a matter of minutes. Ouch. Dislike.

Have you a favorite crockpot? I would purchase another one if only I could control the temperature EXACTLY as I desire.

*UPDATE: after 3 1/2 hours with 2 quarts of water in each crockpot, the one on the left (the oval one) tests at 200 degrees and the one on the right tests at 145 degrees. That is a significant difference and one must make proper adjustments depending on which crockpot one is using. The boiling point of water is 212, so 200 is really way too hot for "slow" cooking. It's almost like boiling your meal for many hours. Bummer.

Update number 2: after 4 1/2 hours the water in the crockpot to the left is boiling. Not just simmering, but boiling all around the edges. The old crockpot on the right registers at 163 degrees.

Update number 3: the following day. This morning I put 2 quarts of water into each crock pot. I set the newer (hotter) one on the "warm" setting. I set the older one again on the "low" setting. After 5 hours, the crock pot on the warm setting only got as warm as 134 degrees which would be dangerous for cooking meat all day at that low a temperature. The older crock pot was a nice 159 degrees on the low setting. If we had put the newer crockpot on its low setting, it would have been boiling, at least 200 degrees like yesterday's test. Point being: it is not wise to cook all day on only the "warm" setting. And cooking on the low setting of today's crockpots is a challenge; one must cook less time, and/or add more liquid and/or cycle from low to warm and back to low. Do not rely on the warm setting solely. Some people who have been frustrated with the high temperature of the "low" setting have resorted to the "warm" setting, but it is too low. AGH. Too hot. Too cold. Where is Goldilocks? We need something "just right!"

Yum.

Days like today always make me happy.

What is it about the smell of bread and buns baking? Wonderful.

Go Twins

We enjoyed a great weekend in "the cities" - we went to a Twins game and saw the great new stadium, had quality time together as a family, heard our youngest son, the seminarian, preach and topped it off with an afternoon at the zoo!

A perfectly lovely not-so-ordinary weekend.

Eat your vegetables...

Yesterday I decided it was time to use some of the vegetables that came in our CSA (community sustaining agriculture) box. Some of these vegetables were on my list of things I'm no so inclined to eat. That being said, I will now eat my vegetables....
I think I love beets.... (beet bundt cake, lots of chocolate...)

Kale, which is known to be extremely healthy, is just fine when baked with apples..(apple-kale spice muffins)

And the ever prolific zucchini makes tasty muffins with a few important additions ..(zucchini chocolate chip muffins)

Zucchini bread made with applesauce and added cranraisins.

Very moist.

A few friends dropped by for a taste-test.

Another perfectly lovely ordinary day.

I've always thought highly of..

my feet.

Seriously, I don't actually know if I have beautiful feet. I don't know the qualities or characteristics of nice feet, however, when I was a young girl (I think about 11 or 12), my Aunt remarked to me "Oh, you have such beautiful feet!"

And so, from that time on, I have always thought highly of my feet.

And here's the point: words can have a powerful affect.

Guard your words. Make them ones of encouragement.

Some 12 year old may still remember your compliment even when they are 63!

The toothpick game

If you grew up in my husband's family, you would immediately know why this toothpick is on the back of this chair.

It's time for some fun; time to see who can exhibit strength and balance... the goal is to pick this toothpick up by your mouth while not touching the ground.... perhaps the following pictures will explain it..
Get a sturdy chair. The person usually lays across the seat of the chair; one can hold anywhere on the chair for balance. You just can't touch the ground!

And, after you have gotten the toothpick in your mouth, you must return to the seat of the chair for it to be deemed a successful grab!

The fun of this game is that everything can give it a try. Here is our niece, who has grown up with this game so she is familiar with the technique!

A successful grab! Toothpick in mouth! Now to return to the chair and not fall...

The children really enjoyed being part of the game. Can you see he just grabbed the toothpick?

and another successful toothpick grab!

Sometimes we would move the toothpick not so far around the back of the chair to make it slightly easier. I love the look of concentration here! This was her first introduction to the game.

Regardless of age, the competitive spirit remains. Here is hubby's oldest brother giving it a try; he has probably done this game for many years! And is successful too, of course.

Hubby gives it a go. It takes some strength to do this; I took pictures...

The fun thing about family time like this is that everyone is together and enjoying the activity; and even our youngest little one wanted her turn... so we laid the toothpick and her pacifier on the back of the chair...

and her daddy held her while she grabbed her pacifier with her mouth!

She was quite proud of her efforts! She has a future ahead of her in the toothpick game!

Another perfectly lovely ordinary day.

Happy Birthday Sara

Happy Birthday today to the first girl to join our male dominated family when she became our first daughter-in-law!
You are a treasure; a wonderful wife to our son, a loving mother to this sweet grandson and a dear daughter-in-law. Have a blessed birthday today!

Time to step it up

I've been a little lazy lately, especially in the cooking and baking category. Perhaps the hot weather (unusual for beautiful Minnesota!) has something to do with it. Or maybe it's the nice fresh fruit and vegetables that are readily available, replacing my need for breads...
However, today I decided I was really missing this easy artisan bread (have you bought the book "Artisan bread in five minutes a day"? Seriously, if you follow the easy directions this is the result! I just mixed up the dough and I will be feasting on a loaf just like this later today..

And, since company is coming this week, these are a MUST.

I guess I'm getting back into the swing of things. :)

You are so special to me!!

Ah! Family camp is the best!

Last weekend we had 3 nights at our wonderful Bible camp. It was a time to relax together as a family and with friends (and their families) - and to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of God's world. We started one of the mornings with an early morning pontoon cruise, complete with hot coffee and warm pastries. What a way to start the day.

The lake was lovely.

Beside the still waters...

We had some fantastic company. Have you ever heard a loon? It's almost a magical sound.

The afternoon afforded some other kind of water sports.

It was only a one seater though, so I stayed dry on land with my camera.

Our eldest son enjoys some time to talk with dad.

Our youngest son gets ready to enjoy his own little boys in the lake...

It's not too high for this fella!

Away we go!

Next up... here he comes...

Splash about to happen!

Sister is an old pro at this now.

We were so fortunate to have a warm sunny day for enjoying the lake!

Here is another little sweetheart.

I seriously love this profile.

I think the name of this game is "let's pull grandpa's feet!"

Cousins

I thought this was cute; they were getting ready for our Sunday morning service. We eventually filled up the whole row. It was a bit active...

Someone found a little turtle friend.

Another perfectly lovely ordinary day at camp...
