Artist genes maybe?

This is a photograph of a photograph that I took around 1979 while we lived on the farm in Hagen, Saskatchewan. It is of our two sons (number three was not yet born) walking a sweet tree lined path on the farm. My mother loved it and had it enlarged.
(I photographed the enlargement)
Then a few years after she had it enlarged she signed up for an adult education class on painting. I had no idea she ever considered painting but happily she went on to paint this sweet picture:
.
.
and, if you notice, she added the third son.
.
I love it.
....
.
.

And, since I'm featuring the artist genes in my family, my father also took some adult education art classes (he was in his 50's, I suppose, so not all that old!) and this cute winter scene is one I have framed and I hang every Christmas season over the fireplace mantle.
.
It seems to me that he may have been looking at some pictures similar to those Grandma Moses painted. At any rate, this is an original Grandpa Crater piece of art!
Enjoy!

Happy Birthday J. T.

"Well, Mrs. Berge, when do you want to have this baby?" said the Doctor at my visit on January 6, 1977. He was just making general conversation with this question.
(He was not introducing the topic of inducing me as that was rarely done at that time.)
I was not uncomfortable at this point in my pregnancy and was not due to deliver our first born child until the end of January. However I replied "well, if I could design it, I would want this baby tomorrow and I would want a BOY, but if not that scenario, I will be happy to have a girl or boy anytime else." He smiled and said "well, I'm pretty sure you'll fill out your chart." (meaning, go to my due date the end of the month.) I had no reason to disagree with him as I had not the slightest symptom of labor.
None whatsoever.
.
I had a good reason for wanting a son on January 7th. You see, it was my father's birthday and my father had died 16 months earlier. In fact, he died 2 months before my wedding. So I was still grieving his loss and the special events of which he was no longer part. If we were to give birth to a son, we were choosing to name him John after my father (and Tobias, for his middle name, after Wally's father.) What a fine name, I thought! John Tobias! Oh, I hoped for a son..
.
However, I had little serious expectations of having our first child early.
.
The evening of January 6, 1977, my body began "no turning back" labor... and I called the Doctor and said "do you remember when I wanted this baby? I said tomorrow and I think there's a pretty strong chance it will happen as I need to come to the hospital soon!"
.
9:30 a.m. January 7, 1977.
John Tobias
.
Happy Birthday to our firstborn son!
Thank you, Lord, for the gift of January 7th...
Our little blondie...
.

and now, he is a grown man, with a lovely wife and his own little blondie...
.

Three generations.
.
A perfectly lovely not-so-ordinary son.

Library grandma

I love books and we encouraged reading when our sons were growing up. We read many books aloud and listened to many wonderful stories as well, mostly while making the long drive to New Jersey... we have the fondest of memories of listening to all the Chronicles of Narnia ... many times, in fact. I have kept most of the books, both picture books and read-by-yourself books.
.
All of our grandchildren love books, which makes us pleased.
.
The grandchildren that live in our town have taken to "borrowing" books from grandma's library and bringing them back for another book. Our eldest grand-daughter is an independent reader now and she has been borrowing books for her reading pleasure. (and oh, does grandma think that's so wonderful!) Although I have a nice supply of books, I continue to purchase some to increase the selection. Lately I purchased the first Nancy Drew book and that was a big hit! Every time our little reader returned the book, I was sure to have the next one available. She loved that.
.
This Christmas I got a great gift for library grandma!
My own personal library check-out system!
(thank you, Meghan)
Isn't this the sweetest thing? My own personal stamp, stamp pad, library check-out cards and the holder that glues to the back cover of the book!
I love it!
.

I just couldn't wait to have someone come needing book #4...

Yeah! My first officially checked-out book!

Our library proves comfortable reading furniture as well....
.
another perfectly lovely ordinary day...

(Book suggestions welcomed. Do you have a favorite book or series from your childhood?)

Shopping cart question

I always like blog posts that include a picture, so above is a picture of what's going on this week ... the de-decorating of our tree and home. It's a bit early for me to take everything down, but I want to have it done before this weekend and, as it takes a long time, I had to get started.
It will look so bare! AGH.
.
But I have a question in this post, so you might have to make a comment if it suits your fancy. I know lots of folks read and don't comment, but perhaps today you may have an opinion to share.
The question is: do you make use of the shopping cart wipes when you go shopping?
(Do you live in an area/country that doesn't provide them?)
I am borderline fanatic about winter germs as I dislike being ill ..
(well, frankly, who likes being sick??)
Anyway, I ALWAYS use the wipes provided and I even stopped going to one of the grocery stores in our town because they stopped providing them.
(I spoke to the customer service once about it, she said the "headquarters" told them to stop as they were making a mess! I told her to tell headquarters that I will shop elsewhere because of that - and also to tell "headquarters" that Walmart, Target and our other grocery store provide them... and to be fair, they did appear again for a while in the store, but are not there last I checked)
Back to the subject: I have to admit that I am surprised how many people ignore the opportunity to clean their cart handle. Yes, I know that one can pick up germs from a zillion other sources while out and about; other items in the store, or just chatting with someone that isn't feeling well, but still, it is without a doubt someone else's hands were on that handle before mine. And touching something that someone else has recently touched is one of the prime source of spreading germs. Telephones, hand towels, door knobs, you get the picture.
.
While I'm on this discussion (is it a discussion when I'm doing all the talking??), how about using the same pen to sign when checking out? That is SO not me! I bring my own pen (and my own "sylus" if I have to use the electronic signature thingy)... I remember clearly the day that the person checking out prior to me was clearly ill and was even discussing being ill with the cashier. Then I was next. I was supposed to use the designated electronic pen he had just used... and I looked at the dear cashier and said "I can't touch that after that ill man" ... the cashier was astute enough to grab a paper towel and some spray cleanser and cleaned the pen and surrounding area. Very helpful! (I imagine I would be a poor cashier, I would be always backing away from people....)
.
My last problem is shaking hands in church. I hate to appear unwilling or unfriendly anyplace, but certainly in church I want to be friendly. But please, is there some other way to smile and greet someone? Does your church say "take a moment and greet the people around you??" - ours does and it is just impossible not to shake hands. (yes, I do carry hand sanitizer).
(Again, to be fair, in the height of last season's flu season they suggested we refrain from hand shaking but we've been back doing it for months)
One day after church I noticed someone cough into their hands and then shortly thereafter I saw the same person shake my hubby's hand. After their brief visit, I went up to hubby and said "don't ask me why right now, but could you go and wash your hands ... right now?" (yes, he did)
.
So, do I sound paranoid? As I re-read this, I think I do.
At any rate, if you shop at the same stores I do, you will have a good chance I've cleaned your cart handle!
.
Tips: eat right, exercise, get a good night's sleep and avoid stress...
and maybe use the cart wipes..

Frosty morning for the swans..

This morning I remembered to bring my camera along as I took a trip into town.
I had to cross the river and I pulled over and got out of the car to take a few pictures.
We recently experienced a number of storm days (we had 16 1/2 inches of snow in back-to-back storms) and it was so nice to see the beautiful blue sky once again!
.
I was delighted to see the beautiful swans that have been in our river.
We can see them from our home, but they are too far away and through too many branches to capture them in a picture from the vantage point of our house.
But right here by the river, I got a few good pictures.
The steam rising from the river adds to the picture..
It was about 7 below zero when I took these pictures...
How nice ot them to offer me a profile view...

I love winter.

Christmas pictures

We enjoyed a wonderful "Berge" Christmas at John & Sara's home this year.
Sara had every room decorated beautifully!
It was such a grand Christmas!
I loved every minute of it, in fact
Here are some random pictures I want to post for you to enjoy too...

Little Emersyn looked festive in her soft and cuddly red sweater
(a birthday gift from Aunt Marlane)

I was having fun switching from my small camera to one of John & Sara's SRL camera's.
This is with our smaller camera. All the pictures on this post are from our camera, the pictures on the previous post are with the nice SRL camera.
Sara loves cooking and baking (a girl after my own heart...) We had lots of good meals. Here she is rolling out the dough for our Christmas Eve Pot Pie to go with our Christmas eve milk rice.
A blending of two traditions... and it was quite good!
Brooklyn loves crafty things and she was happy trying out this beading kit..

And Daniel was happy to help his sons set up their new Geotrax.
The cousins enjoyed playing with it.

Brooklyn was really skilled at rolling out lefse.
There are more lefse-making pictures in the post that preceeds this one.

Tobias loves cars and trucks and he loves to line them up.
I think that is so cute. He is going to be a very orderly child.

The "big" boys enjoyed playing the Wii.
Doesn't everyone?

It's always good to have extra help in the kitchen, right?

I never had the fun of bows and ribbons, only having had sons.
So, this is really fun to have pink and bows in our family!

The brothers cook breakfast.

Tobias did a great job sharing his environment with so many cousins.
He had to share his toys and even his bedroom... and he did it all
so graciously! Good job, Tobias!
.
It was a perfectly lovely ordinary day...
.
well, I guess it wasn't ordinary to have Christmas and all be together....
but it WAS perfectly lovely!

More Christmas pictures

Here are some more random Christmas pictures that captured the fun of our family gathering.
These are memories now, and ones we already treasure even as we look forward to making more of them in the future.
.
In the picture above, Tobias was the engineer of our little train.
This picture is typical of our sons; enjoying a strategy/thinking game.

One of the things Hannah wanted for Christmas was a nightgown for herself and her American girl doll. She was so happy to get it!

John, who once was a fussy eater, is now a fabulous chef.
Take heart, in case you have a fussy eater...

Josiah's Grandma Seibel made this cute hat.
I played around with the picture in picasa, just leaving the color on the hat.
Kind of cool...
Kissing cousins...

and more kissing cousins...

My krumkake..

We made lefse on Christmas day so that John and Sara could get the hang of it now that they have a new lefse grill. Brooklyn, who has had a fair amount of experience making lefse, really took charge. She was very very good at it too!

And she was also interested in the finished product; here Sara is doing the all-important preparations: spread softened butter on the lefse, liberally apply sugar and fold or roll up and serve! Delicious!

Yum. Lefse. Have you ever had it?

It wasn't easy getting a picture of Luke; he is often in motion!
He was very happy with this transformer for Christmas and this picture is really so "Luke"...

Another sweet picture of Mattea.

After the children were sleeping, we began playing the Wii - and I had just purchased the "Just Dance" game. Sara and Meghan were having fun trying it out. Andrea and I got in the mix shortly thereafter. It was tons of fun!

The snow and fresh air was tons of fun!

Berge men like rook.
.
We celebrated Sean's December birthday and he got a great helmet and shield to go with his sword.

He went to battle with his Dad.

A view of the long table;
8 adults and 8 children at the table.
One toddler in the high chair.
One infant either being held or content in her bouncing seat..
.
Another perfectly lovely ordinary day.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year, 2011!
May your year be filled with the blessings of family, health and friendship...
Just like these two precious boy cousins...
